1886-1962Michael Curtiz siempre sera el director de Casablanca, pero es mucho mas que eso. Es un director que asociamos a Warner Bros, que se atrevio con todo y que raramente defraudo, ni en peliculas musicales ni en filmes de aventuras ni en melodramas romanticos ni en largometrajes de accion. Tampoco, desde luego, en sus westerns, un punado de selectas realizaciones por las que parece no pasar el tiempo. Este hungaro perspicaz y concienzudo fue, con toda seguridad, el director, junto a Raoul Walsh, que mejor partido supo sacar del discutible actor Errol Flynn. Con el como protagonista, realiza su famosa trilogia, impropiamente llamada “de las ciudades”, compuesta por Dodge, ciudad sin ley, Oro, amor y sangre y Camino de Santa Fe, pero tal vez el mejor de sus westerns es el itinerante Los comancheros, que sera tambien su ultima pelicula, realizada poco antes de morir. Nacido en Budapest como Kertesz Mihaly, trabajo en su pais, alternando tareas directoriales con las de actor, entre 1912 y 1918. A partir de esa fecha, que coincide con el final de la industria cinematografica hungara, dirige en Austria y otros paises de Europa occidental hasta que Jack Warner, impresionado por alguna de las peliculas que habia visto de Curtiz, lo lleva a los Estados Unidos donde, pasado el tiempo, se convertiria en el director mas emblematico de Warner Bros, para quien realizo pelicula tras pelicula sin descanso hasta llegar al centenar. Lo sorprendente es que rara vez el producto que salia de sus manos era una mediocridad y con frecuencia resultaba notable, independientemente del genero o la clave narrativa que utilizara.Under a Texas Moon (Tantas veo...). 1930. 82 minutos. 17 Daves, Delmer
1904-1977Delmer Daves, que con el tiempo seria uno de los hombres claves del western norteamericano, nacio en San Francisco poco antes del famoso terremoto que destruyo la ciudad. Estudiante de leyes, cuentan que sintio de repente la fascinacion del desierto. A su vuelta de una larga y solitaria estancia en tierras de Arizona con los indios Hopi y Navajo, decidio hacer cine. Un primer contacto con los estudios californianos no lo disuadieron, sin embargo, de interrumpir sus estudios universitarios, pero despues de terminar estos volvio a Hollywood, donde consiguio un contrato como guionista. Las dos peliculas mas famosas que escribio en la decada de los 30 fueron El bosque petrificado (The Petrified Forest, Archie Mayo, 1936) y Tu y yo (Love Affair, Leo McCarey, 1939). De esta ultima existe un remake, realizado tambien por Leo McCarey, en 1957, An Affair to Remember, interpretada por Cary Grant y Deborah Kerr, que en Espana se titulo, como el original, Tu y yo y que es una de las cumbres del melodrama. Su primer filme lo dirige en 1943; se trata de la pelicula de propaganda belica Destino: Tokio (Destination Tokyo), que a pesar de los condicionantes de su gestacion resulto ser una obra muy estimable. En 1950 dirige un western seminal, Flecha rota; sera el primero de los suyos y una obra fundamental para abrir nuevos senderos argumentales al genero, en este caso el de la dignidad del nativo americano. Parece que el asunto le tocaba de cerca porque es tambien guionista, aunque en esta ocasion no director, de la pelicula de Robert D. Webb, White Feather (1955), con el mismo tono reivindicativo del indio americano que Flecha rota. Toda la decada de los 50 esta dominada, en la filmografia de Delmer Daves, por el western, hasta el punto de que apenas dirige, en esa decada, peliculas que no pertenezcan al genero. Cierto es, por el contrario, que en los anos 60, en que realizara sus ultimas peliculas, se consagra casi en exclusiva al melodrama, en un registro muy diferente del que le hizo alcanzar grandes alturas como creador cinematografico, sin que eso quiera decir que estas ultimas peliculas sean desdenables. Hom bre de estilo invisible, enormemente eficaz, es sin lugar a dudas Delmer Daves uno de los grandes directores de westerns. Posee un universo propio, que le hace brillar en el terreno narrativo tanto co mo en el conceptual. Su mirada tolerante y solidaria, al tiempo que comprensiva; su consideracion del ser humano como algo lleno de flaquezas pero rico en posibilidades; la idea de camaraderia, puesta de manifiesto en las situaciones menos propicias, hacen que sus peliculas puedan servir como modelos de cine maduro, que trasciende los limites originales del genero para ahondar en la naturaleza humana. El tren de las tres y diez y El arbol del ahorcado estan a la altura de los mejores westerns nunca realizados; Flecha rota, Jubal, La ley del talion y Cowboy se acercan mucho a los mejores. 1899-1964Nacido en Indianapolis, se gradua por la Universidad de Chicago. Razones extraculturales lo llevan a Cali fornia poco antes del famoso crack de Wall Street, que le alcanza plenamente, lo que le obliga a reemprender una interrumpida carrera literaria y le conduce, en ultima instancia, a Hollywood. Autor de no velas y de guiones cinematograficos, baste con decir que el es el responsable de la historia a partir de la que se construyo uno de los mejores westerns de to dos los tiempos (para muchos, el mejor), Centauros del desierto (The Searchers, John Ford, 1956). Tam bien escribio la novela en la que se basa el filme de John Huston Los que no perdonan (The Unfor given, 1960). 1889-1943Nacido en San Diego, William S. Van Dyke fue actor infantil, tanto de vodevil como, despues, de cine. No nos encontramos ante un realizador genial y creativo sino, por el contrario, ante un hombre con un alto grado de profesionalidad, minucioso, incapaz de estropear una buena historia y, en muchos casos, perfectamente capaz de elevarla por encima de su nivel. No es de extranar, en consecuencia, la buena imagen que tuvo siempre dentro del mundo de Ho llywood, que premio sus buenos oficios con dos Os car, el primero por La cena de los acusados (The Thin Man, 1934) y el segundo por San Francisco (1936).Uno de sus grandes exitos lo obtuvo precisamente con La cena de los acusados, ba sada en la ultima novela de Dashiell Hammett, que es el origen de hasta cinco secuelas, de las que las tres inmediatamente siguientes llevan tambien la firma de Van Dyke. Conocido como “Woody Una Toma” por su rapidez y seguridad durante el rodaje, estuvo muy vinculado, personal y profesionalmente, a la pareja artistica formada por Jeannette MacDonald y Nelson Eddy, a quienes dirigio en seis peliculas y media de las ocho que protagonizaron juntos (la media corresponde a Luna llena, New Moon, 1940, empezada por Van Dyke y terminada por Robert Z. Montador desde 1933, trabaja sucesivamente en Inglaterra, hasta poco antes del desencadenamiento de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y en los Estados Uni dos contratado por RKO hasta que en 1952 pasa a ejercer labores de realizador. Su primera pelicula es The Tall Texan, un western intrascendente como el resto de su filmografia, compuesta casi exclusivamente por filmes de accion.
